How to Work Your Way Out of Poverty and the Ghetto - No Government Assistance Needed…

One thing I love about America – you can move up the socio-economic ladder “at will” regardless of your race, religion, national original, or gender - if you are willing to work hard, be the best at what you do, and be a legal citizen. My parents were custodians and maids with very little education. We were from a large family of nine children. The boys worked after school helping my dad with janitorial cleaning duties and mowing lawns. The girls worked with my mom as “maids” cleaning homes, cooking food and caring for children. My dad served 3 years as a solider in the Air Force. My mom worked as a cook in the public schools in our town.

Here are a few things I’ve learned about how people today can work themselves out of poverty…

1. Live righteous – go to church and stay out of trouble. Don’t lie or steal. Don't critize or complain. Mind your own business. Work for what you want. Help others in need doing simple acts of kindness – helping the elderly, volunteering at homeless shelters, running errands for the disabled and etc.

2. Be industrious – learn how to make things and fix things, learn how to turn knowledge into cash, and learn how to buy & sell stuff online. My family could not afford to buy us new clothes or shoes, toys for Christmas, or food at restaurants. The way we made money as children was collecting bottles on side the road, fixing old lawn mowers on the trash and using them to mow yards for money, even asking for old cars sitting behind houses and making them run like new.


3. Go to school and learn. Become fascinated with every subject and relate everything to something you want to do in life. Learn physics and biology to further your interest in how airplane fly or how the body works, learn geometry to help build a storage room or align the wheels on a car, or learn English to help you read, speak and write well to advance your career.

4. Articulate your dreams to others – people who dream and tell others are more likely to accomplish BIG things in life because others will want to help you and be a part of your success.

5. Take tough courses in school - push yourself well above average. Use your time as a young person to build your career. Don’t waste your teen years with frivolous or mindless chatter, evil and malicious pranks or running the streets. Use your time at home or after school for self improvement, homework, and community activities that will build your skills for the future.

6. Decide with your parents on a career or skill that you enjoy. If you like cars, start hanging out with people who work on cars - find shops that will let you clean up or help technicians. If you like speaking and law – visit a law center or ask to interview a lawyer about his or her work, or if you can work as an assistance. If you like medicine – do some volunteer work that will get you inside a hospital. If you like looking good and making others look good, hang around cosmetology shops.




7. Take classes in high school to prepare you for technical training or college level courses. No child or family trying to get out of poverty can afford to waste their high school years taking general courses and electives that do not impact their career. Do not set foot on a college campus until you firm up a career decision.

8. Take and internship to help you get started in your career.

9. Make good grades and pass all standardized test (ACT, SAT, GRE and etc.). You can save $1,000's of dollars in college expenses by scoring proficient or advanced on national exams. Preparation is the key to passing national exams. Purchase a STUDY GUIDE to practice prior to taking tests.




10. Get certified or licensed and/or get a degree. Having the right credentials for a job is like a ticket out of poverty. Your credential tells everyone you have the training and discipline for the job at hand.

11. Engage in professional development and continuing education throughout your career. Stay up-to-date and current in your field with modern equipment and processes.

12. Develop your niche – what’s unique about you and your business? What makes people recognize you as a professional? What do you want people to remember you by - “cheapest price, best service, friendliest service, best deals, most caring, most detailed, what..?

13. Work hard and be smart in all you dealings.

14. Treat people with dignity and respect.

15. Show good manners. Keep your word and don’t be wishy-washy.

16. Stand on principles and don’t commit immoral acts, treat you family and friends with kindness, be concerned about others welfare, plan your future and be creative, look out for the safety and well-being of others, care for the sick, help those in need, and on and on with the things you know are decent and right.

17. Help others achieve success – be a mentor to young people struggling for identity and trying to get out of poverty.

18. Give back to the community, schools and churches that help you achieve success.

19. Celebrate your success and the success of others by never allowing yourself to forget where you came from. Make it an annual event to recognize the achievement of others in your profession.

20. Keep a record of your history – so you’ll never forget the past in hope to inspire others.

How to Repair a Treadmill Walking Belt With Simple Household Items

This repair procedure will work on the following treadmill belt problems...

1) frayed or cut belts due to belt pulling to one side;

2) belt slipping due to under-cloth damage;

3) belt damaged by overstretching.

It is recommended when the value of the walking belt exceeds treadmillvalue. For example, a new walking belt may exceed $180.00 on a 132" X14" belt. If this amount exceeds the value of your treadmill, consider a cheap repair method. You'll need the following items to make repairs: 2 rolls duct tape, cloth cutting scissors, spray adhesive (SuperTak is the best), and one-layer blanket insert (less than $5 at Wal-Mart).

1) Measure the belt. You'll need a tape measure or measuring device.

a) Get a pencil and place two marks the full length of the belt andmeasure it. b) Rotate the belt by turning the treadmill on and off quickly to get another full-length measurement. c)Repeat the steps until you have the exact measurements.

2) Remove the treadmill belt using the procedures outlined in the video below...

3) Clean the outer portion of the belt with a mild soap and water solution and let dry.

4) If the cloth ply on the underside of the belt is loose, take a few minutes and remove the entire layer. It may be a difficult at first, but once the layer begins to separate - the entire layer will easily come loose.

5) Use the duct tape to completely reline the bottom layer. This can take an entire roll of tape. Your underside should be completely lined with duct tape.

6) Reinstall the belt on the treadmill and adjust walking tension. The purpose of this step is to seat the duct tape adhesive. Walk on the treadmill lightly for about 1 minute (if it start to slip, this is ok).

7) Now, here's the hard part... Remove the treadmill belt again in order to add or install the cloth blanket liner.

8) With the belt remove, go ahead and cut your cloth blanket liner to the specified length and width of your treadmill belt. The cuttings can be done in sectional pieces. Notice, most blankets have a soft and acourse side. We will be gluing the course side to the duct tape.

9) Prepare your work area by covering the ground with a cloth or tarp. This prevents the sticky adhesive from damaging your workspace. A concrete floor is the best workspace. Now spray the adhesive to thesection of the belt to receive the first cut lining section. Let adhesive stand for about 1 minute and then apply the lining. Repeat these steps until the belt is completely repaired. Please note that the seams must butt together perfectly. Let the lining completely bond in about one (1) hour.

10) Reinstall the belt and tighten to specification. If the belt has tears to the edges, place a strip of duct tape along the top edges of the treadmill belt after the assembly is completed. This can be accomplished by turning on the treadmill and spooling the tape along the edges as it is rotated with the on and off switch.

Repeat the steps on both edges of the belt. You're done!

Having a 3 year warranty did me absolutely no good.

How to Change Rear Spark Plugs on a Ford Windstar Minivan

Start cussing now - get it out of the way before attempting this job! There are 3 ways to get to the back three spark plugs on a Winstar Minivan (as a reference, I'm using a 1999 Windstar with 3.8 Liter Engine with a Spark Gap of .052-.056 inches)...

1. Raise the Vehicle Up on a Lift and Remove the Passenger Side Wheel - to Gain Access Underneath.

You can reach the first (back side) spark plug from this position - Simply reach around side of the block just behind the wheel. Remove the spark plug wire by twisting and pulling on the boot at the same time. Use a 5/8" spark plug socket with rubber insulator protector to help lift the plug when it is unscrewed.

To reach the other two back plugs, you'll need to raise the vehicle all the way up. You will need to "snake your hand" through a small area just above the transmission pan leading to the back side of the block. It is tight, but there's sufficient room to maneuver a ratchet and socket. Thankfully, you'll have sight to these plugs unlike working blind from the topside. Estimated Time: 1-1/2 Hours.

2. Underhood Method Requires Removal of the Cowl - Remove the Plastic Section that Covers the Wiper Motor on the Upper Firewall. You'll need to remove the wiper arms, wiper motor assembly, washer fluid lines and the electrical connectors to the motor to gain access to the spark plugs. Once removed, you have good access to replacing all three plugs. You'll be lying across the engine plenum or intake, so get a few finder covers or blankets and make yourself comfortable. Estimated Time: 1-1/2 Hours.

3. Underhood Method Requires Removal of Throttle Body, Intake Air Tubes and Filter Assembly. Once removed, you'll have just enough room to reach around the back side of the engine on the right (driver side) to insert a spark plug socket, stubby extension and a 3/8" drive pull handle. The ratchet handle makes the wrench too fat. The left side (passenger side) is even tighter, but you can reach around and remove the first plug. Estimated Time: 1-1/2 Hours.

If you are a professional technician, Ford recommends removing the upper intake manifold. Make sure the engine is cold before you start. Keep in mind that aluminum cylinder heads can strip spark plug threads if the engine is hot during removal. Install all spark plugs by hand, making sure the threads are not crossed before tightening. Torque spark plugs to specification, this means "wrist tight" and DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN!
